Hi
Sorry to start a new thread on this subject but last seems to be lost in a time loop. (Probably my fault for being usless on computers)

I am looking for a coil which I think is Honda part number 0327189(Item 4 on page 14 of the manual). It is a coil distributor and has two plug lead connections.

Is this available and if so how much to post to 50054 Fucecchio Firenze Italy.
Thank you in anticipation

Dear all

We are experiencing some problems with our Mb2/50s, since it barely gives us enough power to get out of and into the harbour. We have a "normal" 26 foot sailboat and a standard fixed-two-blade propellar.

The engine has normally (this is our first season) been able to drive us at about 3-4 knots in no-wind conditions, which I guess is OK, but not great. But yesterday we could barely enter the harbour, which caused some concern with the crew.

I would thus like to ask, 1) how much speed you get out of your engines and 2) if anyone has any idea of why the engine doesn't give us more power?

With best regards and many thanks for a great forum!

Hi,
still having all kinds of trouble with my MB2A, I got my hands on a Honda BF6B outboard motor. Looking at the engine and it specs, it seems it has not changed a lot since the BF75 basis the MB2A was built on.

Question: Is it possible to either replace the MB2A completely by a BF8A/6B (needs to fit the saildrive and exhaust etc.) or parts of it?

Hi everybody,

I was just towed to harbour with my MB2a not willing to start any more. I had some starting problems in the last weeks, the engine started immediately the time before.

Now, the engine does not start any more.

I checked the whole electric systems, the resistances for the exciter and ignition coils are correct. The sparks for both ignition plugs are yellow, this might be a hint? Fuel supply seems to be o.k. as the plugs get wet after excessive starting exercises.

I have no new plugs at hand as I'm on a island with limited supplies. They are not too old anyway.

Any hints? Are the yellow sparks a clear indication for a failure of the ignition coil?

Thanks, Harald

I'm thinking of buying a Pegasus 800 yacht that is currently fitted with an MB2A50S. Unfortunately the engine is a non-runner and when I went to look round the other day it was seized solid.

The broker selling the yacht reckons the engine wants chucking and replacing with an outboard, as in his experience it will be nothing but trouble even if repaired.

I'd like to believe otherwise, and what I've seen of this forum so far gives me hope!

Now I suspect the boat has been left unused for a couple of years, judging by the general condition of everything, and I'm wondering whether it might even be the gearbox / intermediate drive that is jammed or seized.

Is it possible to split the engine from the drive leg with the boat afloat?

If so I'd be reasonably happy to do that and could then quickly see which part is locked up, and also bring the engine home and give it a proper looking at on the bench. If we buy the boat it'll have to come out briefly for survey so I can check prop and final drive then, but what I don't want to end up in is a situation where I have to pay for shore storage at a yard whilst I tinker about with the engine.

Any advice much appreciated...

Last sunday I was cruising down a complete flat and windless lake at low throttle. A motor vessel was coming from behind and was producing high waves. These waves made the boat heavily and after a few seconds the engine died as if there was no fuel. I manually pumped some fuel to the engine and It ran flawless. Can somebody explain this. Fuel tank is clean, fresh fuel, new filters, clear carburator.

Further I was wondering when and how you use your Choke? Documentation states that you should use it only when colder than 20 degrees celsius.

Trying to sort out the "alarm" functions I noticed they don't work. The oil pressure switch works fine and so does the alarm and lights. It seems that the exciter coil is only giving out 3-5 volts on the yellow cable, the one supposed to go to the instruments. I have measured the coil and the resistance values are spot on.
The manual doesnt mention the output voltage but the lights are marked 12v and I guess the alarm is too. The low voltage isn't enough to even make the lights glow and even less make the alarm buzz.
The brown cable from the coil going to the CDI gives about 30 volts? The charging coil works fine and gives about 11-12 volts when reving up the engine a bit.

Any idea what could be wrong or have I missed something?

Hi,

Anyone following my recent posts will know I was planning to use a carb from a Honda outboard B100 (the 9.9HP version).

However now I have looked at it I have found an important difference. The outboard carb has a fitting (hose barb?) to take a rubber fuel pipe. This is fitted at 90deg on a tube that is tapered to make an interference fit (pressed in) in the hole in the carb body.

The MB2A carb has an extended shoulder on the hole, and the hole is threaded to take a bolt so that the banjo coupling can be screwed down (because the inboard uses a metal fuel pipe).

Has anyone successfully adapted an outboard carb to fit the metal pipe? I would like to know how.

I thought of tapping a thread into the hole. It is a blind hole so that could be tricky, but even if I can get the taps to do that, there would not be much thread and I would have to cut down the bolt, not leaving much to grip, and it has to take enough force to seal two copper washers. I doubt if a few threads in the alloy would be strong enough. I also thought about adapting the brass tube fitting to mate with the banjo fitting but I can't see a way to do that.

Any ideas anyone?

Hi,

The donor engine I am planning to take parts from has no venturi in the water pipe that goes into the top of the manifold. It is a small tube with a flange on the end, number 14 on page 12 of my Volvo workshop manual.

I can't currently get hold of my own boat engine to measure it. Does anyone have one handy that they could measure please? I need the internal bore diameter and the length. With that info I can make one. I want to get this engine running properly before I transplant it or its parts (currently it overheats).

Very many thanks
Would any member have knowledge of a GRP engine base moulding available ? A friend in the UK has an engine ready to go in but needs either to obtain a base moulding or borrow one to make a copy.

Hi, I'm Steve. My boat is an Invader 22, which also appeared as a Snapdragon 670 (but different to the other Snapdragons).

I have had a MB2A for many years, and done lots of jobs on it, including a full rebuild; but considering I can't get it to start at the moment I can't call myself an expert! I am an engineer but not an engine specialist.

I think the biggest problem with this engine is that you can't lift the engine out of the boat without lifting the boat out of the water. So any work is difficult.

I look forward to hearing from anyone who wants to get in touch.
