Volvo sail drive mb2a50s electric starter
The MB2a50s can be modifield to electric start. I modifield mine 2 ,years ago and have had no real problems. I used a dynastart unit this draws quite a low current on start up and is permently driven to provide 15 amp charging on my Jaguar 25. The modification was quite simple and can be fitted in about 3 hours. The cost of the unit is about £300 but what a difference it makes. I have still have the old hand starter system just in case and it works very well as long as the engine is cafefull maintaned.

Yes I will but it will take a few days, I hope your gearbox repair went well, I am still intersted in how so much damage occured? I am in touch with another mb2a50s owner in Toronto. Do you know anyone who could help with repairs as the owner has no contact with a marine engineer.

I would be also interested in the starter!

Hi Everyone..

I currently have a Leisure 23 with an MB2a /50s engine. I am looking to replace this unit with the minimum of hassle.

What do you suggest?

Regards,

Timon.

RE: Volvo sail drive mb2a50s electric starter
Hi

I was thinking same issue but it seems to be so big and expensive work that it's not wise. It's better to keep existing motor as good condition as possible. Even the power head could be replaced with some Honda motor BF8 or BF6.
If you want to change to another type of motor, also the motorbed should be replaced. Of course outboard motor is one possibility.

Regards Jari

RE: Volvo sail drive mb2a50s electric starter
janttila is right.

The only motor that used to be able to fit easyly was the Saildrive 280. Same bed, easy to do. That engine is hard to find and gave 12hp.

I tried to get one 3 years ago but the dealer was difficult to reach. So, I changed my mind and keep my MB2 in good shape with the help of Howard on this forum.

He can supply you with a lot of parts. It did it for me and for some other owners too and everyone seem to be please with his service.

It is a good engine and easy to maintain and parts on the upper are easy to find at Honda.

Hope that Howard will come back soon on the forum.

Good luck and if you need help or info, will be glad to help U.
