Engine Installation

Engine Installation
Dear Friends,

I've just finished the restoration of my engine and have started with the inboard installation.

Should a waterlock like Vetus LP30 be installed in the exhaust system?
Maybe a gooseneck?
Or is it possible to just run the exhaust host from the muffler directly to the transom? I'll prefer the later if this can be done.

Where is the best place to put the choke control?
Just close to the engine inside the boat, or near the throttle / gear control handle outside? I'm thinking of simplicity to start the engine here.

I'm installing the engine in a 1/8 Ton racing sailboat so simplicity and weight is a big concern, so I'll install a portable gas tank, and a folding propeller for better performance.

Another subject is: how do you cover the hole in the hull where the saildrive passes trough? Bonding a layer of rubber would do the trick but I'm thinking in something smoother for the water flow and an easy way to do maintenance.

Do you guys have pictures of your engine installations?
I'll upload some with the installation process.

In the PHRF fleet where I'm racing, a Sailboat with an inboard engine with a folding propeller would receive a benefit of 24 seconds per hour.
So I hope that the drag caused by the Saildrive will be compensate by this amount in seconds. I will keep you up-to-date with how it goes in the race course.

Thank you in advance, and VERY sorry about my English =)

Kind regards
Román

PS: I'm uploading a couple of pictures of the sailboat, and will send you images from the installation soon.

Volvo did supply a water lock for the MB2 I am about to fit it to my Jaguar over the winter. This will reduce the amount of corrosion considerably. I will upload a picture of the unit in a few days as I'm going away for a week. Many installations run without the trap but I would recommend that one is fitted. I think your English is very good, hope that helps, Howard

RE: Engine Installation
Hi Roman,

My engine has no waterlock but be carefull to make the exhaust hose higher than the floatation line as water might come back in the engine. Mine goes up 2 feet then out at the transom.

My choke in near the cranking handle in the locker on the port side so when I stated the engine I can easyly close or open the choke. This engine start rapidly if you use 3/4 of the throttle and full choke, you reduce the throttle when it start end the the close the choke gradually within 15 seconds.

What kind of folding prop will you be using ? Mine has a fixed 2 blade. I am looking for a folder one but don't know what to buy.

The hole on the bottom of the boat in not cover and has not been covered for the past 25 years so it should not be a big concern.

If you give me your e-mail address I will send you some pictures of my engine installation.

RE: Engine Installation
Hi John, thank you for you reply.

I will follow your advice and will install the exhaust without the waterlock for now, rising the hose high enough like a goosneck.

I am using a Martec Eliptec 2 blade folding prop, with a rebuilt hub.
I didn't test it yet, so I will post my experiences in the near future.
http://martec-props.com/

Gori propellers manufactures a 2 blade folding prop that fits the 50S Saildrive, http://www.gori-propeller.dk/index.asp?ID=87

Last year, the guys from Sillette-Sonic quote me this Gori prop for 485 pounds.
http://www.sillette.co.uk/

I just want to cover the hole for a better waterflow.
I will post some pictures soon, with the solution I'm trying.

Thanks a lot, again. =)

Román

Hi Roman,

Thanks for the info. How did you find the information for using such a propeller? I need one but I do not have all the spec to give to the vendor to get one.

Why does your's has a rebuild hub? Was it used and what is the price for such a prop.

Thanks again.

John.

I am still searching for the pictures to send you. I had a site on the net with a guy installing a similar engine. I will try to find it for you.

RE: Engine Installation
Hi John,

You can get this info from page 53 in the Manual.
The prop that came from factory is a 2 blade 12'' Diameter X 8'' pitch.

Gori, manufactures a 2 blade 11,5'' x 8'' folding prop.

From Gori website
"The hub of the Sail-drive propeller is manufactured with a flexible bushing that absorbs shock and electrically insulates the propeller from the Sail-drive leg, as required by the engine manufacturers. The propeller fits most Sail-drives, for example: Bukh, Sonic, Volvo Penta incl. 50S-drive and 100S-drive, Yanmar and others."

I had to make new hub to adapt this "old" kind of propeller shaft, and also I made it with this inverted cone shape in the outside. Was used and bought it for just u$s 70 =).

Kind regards
Román

Here is a reply I got from Gori. Will I have to make a new hub like yours to fit my shaft? I am not sure I understand why you had to make that unless the propeller was not specificaly made for the MB2a

Thanks again for you help and sorry for my undestanding of the situation.
John

RE: Engine Installation
Hi John,

The Gori prop is exactly what you need. Nothing else. I'ts made to fit the 50S shaft.
I hope that I can get one of theese in the future. If you do, please let us know how it goes.

Mine, is a Martec, not a Gori. It was made with the shaftdrive hub, thas why I had to modify it.
This one, was the only one, with a 12'' dia X 8'' pitch that I could find.

Kind Regards
Román

RE: Engine Installation
Ok now I understand your setup.

Martec wrote me and told me that they do not make any prop for our engine anymore. I will surely buy it and let you know of course and it does perform in the water next year.

Here in Quebec Canada, winter is coming slowly and the temperature at night is near -8c. Some snow has been falling around and it will be time to get my snowmobile out of the garage and play with it shortly.

Cheers

John

Dear John
Yes, at one time we did manuf. propeller hubs to fit them, I am guessing this is sometime around 25 - 30 years ago, and have long since been discontinued. We unfortunately have no propeller to fit this style of shafting and saildrive.

Thank you for your interest in our products.

Sincerely,
Gary Beck

RE: Engine Installation
I have a 2000 Audi A6 2.7T and recently the engine is not working right. after coming to a stop I will step on the gas and the gears wont get caught to turn the wheels. Instead the engine revs and the car rolls until the the wheels work. I am thinking this can be a transmission problem but I really dont know. Could it also be the timing belt?? please let me know if any of you encountered a problem like this before and if you solved it.
